The Salton Sea

The Salton Sea is a huge lake with water 3 times the alkalinity of any ocean.  It is the home for millions of sea birds and lots of fish, especially Tilapia.  The area around the lake is desert.  There are several state parks for camping, fishing and off road riding.  There were lots of people here with their four wheelers, jeeps, motorcycles and dune buggies.  There are also a few towns, like Bombay Beach, that look like tobacco road, old RV's, shacks, pre-WWII trailers.  There is a community here.  The store and gas are at least 30 miles away.  The Salton Sea is at zero sea level and surrounded by high desert mountains over 4,000 feet high.  Mexico is only 40 miles south.
